Sitting on the former site of the Lyceum Theater, one of the city's many vaudeville houses demolished after the 1936 St. Patrick's Day flood, the O'Reilly is the fourth theater project of The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust and the fifth Cultural District theater. The O'Reilly is the Trust's only newly constructed theater and was created with two purposes: to create a downtown home for the Public Theater and to create additional venues for theater, music and other performances.

Designed by world-renowned architect Michael Graves, the O'Reilly Theater is also the only downtown performance venue that features a thrust stage, surrounded by the audience on three sides. The theater features 650 seats and state-of-the-art theater technology.

The O'Reilly Theater was built at a cost of $25 million. Major gifts to the O'Reilly Theater include a naming gift in honor of Dr. Anthony J. O'Reilly from Mrs. Chryss O'Reilly and current and past senior executives of the H.J. Heinz Company, and the Helen Wayne Rauh Rehearsal Hall, named in memory of the Pittsburgh actress by her son, Richard E. Rauh. The ground breaking for the O'Reilly Theater was held on April 23, 1997. On Monday, July 27, 1998, public officials and supporters of The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust and the Pittsburgh Public Theater gathered at the theater to celebrate the tradition of "Topping Out" the O'Reilly Theater.

On Thursday, December 9, 1999, amid a standing-room-only crowd of dignitaries, corporate and foundation leaders, significant donors and staff of The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust and Pittsburgh Public Theater, the O'Reilly Theater was dedicated and officially opened.

  • Follow Interstate 279 South to Pittsburgh
  • Take the Veteran's Bridge/ Interstate 579 Exit
  • Stay in the right lane and take Sixth Avenue Exit
  • Follow Sixth Avenue to Liberty Avenue and turn left
  • Proceed on Liberty Avenue to Seventh Street
  • Make a right on Seventh Street
  • Turn left on Penn Avenue
  • O'Reilly Theater is on the right

  • Follow Interstate 279 South to Pittsburgh
  • The Fort Duquesne Bridge Exit and stay in the left lane
  • Take the Fort Duquesne Blvd. Exit off the bridge
  • Proceed on Fort Duquesne Blvd. to Seventh Street
  • Make a right on Seventh Street
  • Make right on Penn Avenue
  • O'Reilly Theater is on the right

FROM THE SOUTH

  • Follow Route 51 North (Saw Mill Run Blvd.) to the Liberty Tunnels
  • Turn right into the Tunnels and proceed across the Liberty Bridge
  • Take the Interstate 579 Exit onto Crosstown Blvd.
  • Immediately exit to the left on Seventh Avenue
  • Follow Seventh Avenue to Penn Avenue and turn left
  • O'Reilly Theater is on the right

  • Follow Route 837 North through Pittsburgh's South Side
  • At Station Square, turn right on Smithfield Street Bridge
  • Follow Smithfield Street to Sixth Avenue, turn left
  • Proceed on Sixth Avenue to Liberty Avenue
  • Make a left on Liberty Avenue
  • Proceed on Liberty Avenue to Seventh Street
  • Make a right on Seventh Street
  • Make a left at Penn Avenue
  • O'Reilly Theater is on the right

FROM THE EAST

  • From the Turnpike, take exit 6 to Monroeville/Pittsburgh
  • Take I-376 West (towards Pittsburgh) for 13.5 miles to Exit 1C, Grant Street
  • At the signal at the end of the exit ramp, turn left onto Fort Pitt Boulevard
  • Continue another 0.4 miles and at the third signal, turn right, onto Stanwix Street
  • Proceed straight to the fourth light and bear right (45º angle) onto Liberty Avenue
  • Go to the third traffic light and turn left onto Seventh Street
  • Make a left at Penn Avenue
  • O'Reilly Theater is on the right

  • Follow Interstate 376 West to Pittsburgh
  • Take the Boulevard of the Allies Exit
  • Take the 579 exit onto Crosstown Blvd.
  • Immediately exit to the left on Seventh Avenue
  • Follow Seventh Avenue to Liberty Avenue and turn left
  • Proceed on Liberty Avenue to Seventh Street
  • Make a right on Seventh Street
  • Proceed through traffic light at Penn Avenue
  • Make a left at Penn Avenue

FROM THE WEST

  • Follow Interstate 279 North to Pittsburgh
  • Proceed to Fort Pitt Tunnels
  • Take Fort Duquesne Boulevard Exit
  • Proceed on Fort Duquesne Blvd. to Seventh Street
