About This Performance
Krzysztof Urbański, now in his third season as music director of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, conducts the Pittsburgh premiere of Prokofiev’s Russian Overture. Aram Khachaturian was about to become a father when he wrote his Violin Concerto. “My imagination seemed to fly; themes came to me in such abundance that I had a hard time putting them into order.” The result is a vastly entertaining work full of exotic harmonies and dance rhythms. Concertmaster Noah Bendix-Balgley is the soloist. Mussorgsky composed Pictures at an Exhibition for solo piano; Ravel’s stunning orchestration turned it into one of the cornerstones of the orchestral repertoire.
